As a singer-songwriter and guitar player, Thaneah is self-taught, although she was heavily involved in the music program in John Rennie High School, in her home town of Montreal, Canada. She played flute, alto saxophone and sang in the choirs. Private piano lessons and corresponding exams at McGill University in Montreal during her high school years were also part of her musical training. Dreaming of being a performing singer-songwriter during her teens, but also being extremely shy, she only touched the edge of her dream by occasionally performing original piano pieces at recitals.
Music faded out of her life until many years later when a friend encouraged her to buy a second-hand guitar. She played for a few months, and wrote a few half-finished songs. Again, years later, friends introduced her to hand-drumming and chanting, and she was told she had a beautiful voice. This coincided with a gift of "The Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron, from a friend. It was the final catalyst in re-igniting the old high-school dream of writing and performing her own songs.
A year after picking up the guitar again, Thaneah performed at open stages in Edmonton, Vancouver and Montréal. Listener response was enthusiastic and soon she was booked to play at local cafés, clubs and small festivals. After placing second in Edmonton and fourth in Alberta in a singer-songwriter competition in 1999, she recorded her first EP, "Bones". It received radio play on community stations in Edmonton and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. A second EP followed in 2002, and in 2006, Thaneah released her first full-length CD, "Kaleidoscope", which is still being played on Edmonton community radio stations, as well as CBC. A new bilingual CD, half French and half English, is currently in the first stages of the recording process.
